In the blazing summer heat, when you go out for a run, you’re definitely not wearing a jacket! However, when you need to carry personal belongings with you, where do you store them? Today I wanted to share my personal favorite accessories for a long summer run.
If I am running more than 7 miles I like to carry my Nathan Marathon Pak. This belt has a small zip compartment for storage, so you don’t need your jacket pockets or even pant elastic pockets and you know these items will be secure. It has adjustable straps and a belt to secure this around your waist.
Inside my pouch I usually carry and energy snack and my house keys!
My usual energy go-to snack is Honey Stingers Energy Chews. These chews are organic, and made from real fruit and honey. They are packed with energy, vitamins and minerals, and the best part about them… they never melt! I have tried many of the energy gels and “waffles”, but nothing settles in my stomach during a run better than these chews. Sometimes you never know what type of flavor you get with the gel and sometimes its hard to store again if you don’t finish the entire pouch. Chewing an energy “waffle” is difficult on a long run. When I carry the energy chews I find it is easy to pop a few into my mouth and save the rest of the pouch for later in the run, in the case I feel fatigued. Our favorite flavors are Cherry Blossom, Pomegranate Passion Fruit, Pink Lemonade and Orange Blossom. These four are really true to taste and loaded with flavor!
In addition to these items I carry, I also clip my iPod shuffle on my shirt. I know many people have mixed reviews about listening to music and running, but I love it. At a low volume I am able to gain some motivation from my favorite music and also pay attention to the road or trail ahead of me. The iPod shuffle is convenient for me, because of its small, light weight nature. You don’t have to select your music; this allows for less time with eyes off the path ahead. It also charges quickly and can last up to 12 hours non-stop.
What are your favorite items for a summer run? What is your go to run energy snack? And do you listen to music when you run?
